Finance for Android application launched

Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at 3:19 PM

A year ago here at Google, an engineer (Arun Mathew) and a user experience designer (Nick Fey) set out to build a Finance mobile application for Android that would both showcase the possibilities of this new mobile OS and be a lightning fast way for users to access their Google Finance portfolios.  The original goal was to address the frustration of having to set up all the stocks you want to track when using a new mobile portfolio; we're excited to have delivered on this goal for our users. You will notice that the first time you open the Android app, your portfolio is automatically downloaded in the background and it continually syncs with the Google Finance when running, so any changes on the phone will be seen on the website.

As the application took shape we added additional features with the aim of allowing users to get stock quotes, market data and news as fast as possible. Highlights include real-time streaming quotes in your portfolio, rapid stock look-ups with search auto-suggestion, and 'recent quotes' to speed up receiving quotes on-the-go; for each stock there are detailed quotes, charts and news available.  At the moment, this financial data is restricted to US exchanges only.

Throughout development we attracted additional engineers and designers, all volunteering their 20% time. A special thanks goes out to David Fuchs, David Ko, and Bob Rose for all the time and effort spent building the application, as well as to the many other engineers and designers that helped make this a product worth launching.

Finance for Android is available now on the Android marketplace or you can install it with this barcode if you have the barcode scanner application.

Hi, google stocks say 'real time', but the real time stated are sometimes up to 5 minutes behind real time, are google's systems overloaded? Or is 'real time' just a rough phrase?

When you expect to have a bit better Stock charts ?
Current charts are very, very basic..
When you Compare u can't see the price scrolling over price-line.
Only simple lines, no candle sticks.
No averages or indexes.
Volume bar is almost invisible, you can't get idea of the volume difference it is so miniscule, and even in this small bar the volume-sticks(height) don't occupy 100% of the vol-bar.
and so on.. and so on...

Check yahoo charts ..

The only thing I like more about google is not the chart, but the layout i.e. how the things are positioned on the page.

thanx
PS>
Drawing lines would be even better ;), dreaming here..
Do you expect ever to have Options avail. like Yahoo do.

why does com.google.android.apps.finance:remote always run in the background even when I exit out of the application. Even hours and hours I quit using it?

Please make a version of Google Finance Application for S60 as well.

And google says it loves web and open platfrm, and it is contineously discriminating between "Android, iPhone, Blackberry" and "symbian s60". in last few months s60 is lagging behind in google product developments. everythings comes first for the 'three' then might or might not appear for s60. In countries like India no other manufaturer has better support system than Nokia. Hence I can't move to any other phone. Applications should be developed for all major platforms simultaneously. But I am feeling left out.

Can you make this into an open source project?

I like the way this application works, its fast, light and syncs with google finance portfolio...

But WHY is it limited to US???
why no access to international markets? my portfolio syncs but is empty and I cannot find my tickers!

The data is there on Google finance, why not in the app??

I don't know if anyone is looking at these comments since the article was from back in March...

The 2.0 version that was just released seems to crash frequently. I experience a crash every time I try to add a ticker symbol to my portfolio. The app also won't sync with my existing Google Finance portfolio.

hi, goolge finance is very nice for its real time streaming charts. we can add technical indicators while browsing via a pc. Can we add technical indicators in google finance mobile charts?

How hard would it be to add TSX quotes? They appear in the main portfolio. It works for "Stocks" & "Quote Pro". I'd pay for this service if it was truly real time. I guess Google world dominance is delayed until international quotes are supported!
