Over the last few months, we experimented with some changes on the site. We tried a couple of new layouts and received lots of feedback and suggestions from users and Googlers alike. Now, we're excited to launch a newly redesigned Google Finance!
Our goal, first and foremost, was to make our current market data, news, and portfolios easily accessible from anywhere on the site. To that end, the most obvious change is the addition of a left-hand navigation bar that lets you move between the major sections of the site in one click.
Links to sub-sections, like Portfolio-related news or individual portfolios, let you dive even deeper.
We're also launching a number of new features to Google Finance that we hope give you more access to data and provide added flexibility.
- You can now plot your favorite technical indicators (Simple Moving Averages, Bollinger Bands, etc.) on the Google Finance charts by clicking the Technicals link under the chart. Plus you can view OHLC and Candlestick charts too. Click Settings under any chart to get started. (We're really happy about this launch, specifically; technical indicators were one of our most highly requested features.)
- Streaming real-time Recent Quotes are now displayed on the left-hand navigation bar and are hence accessible from any page on the site.
- Comparing related companies is now easy with our new interactive tool. From any company's summary page (for example, CSCO's), click Add or Remove Columns in the Related Companies section, and add the financial metrics you want to track.
- You can customize the homepage. If you see a small drop-down arrow on the right side of a section's title bar, that section can be moved around the page. Click the arrow, and you can choose to move that section up, move it down, move it all the way to the top of the page, or minimize it.

So take a tour around the site -- click around the left-nav, play with the technical indicators; move some sections around the page -- and let us know what you think. If you have feedback or questions, visit the Help Center.
Cheers,
Ayan

Nice look!!!
Google has become the innovator in convoluted, arcane garbage. The new interface is so un-Google like it is sickening.
TERRIBLE NEW VERSION.
I WANT THE OLD VERSION BACK. THIS VERSION DOES NOT OFFER AS MUCH INFORMATION AS THE OLD LIKE HOW MANY STOCKS THE COMPANY HAS.
I HATE IT !! If I wanted to use http://finance.yahoo.com/ I'll browse there! Why isn't it a 'user preference'?
If I can't have the Classic(previous Version) of google.com/finance back, I guess then, you'll make me look for what I want elsewhere. Let's see what a query of bing.com advises the options to be...
Ah good, the new version is totally broken in Opera. Now I get to make the choice between using a Mozilla-based browser or switching off of Google Finance, which is getting less and less like a rock and a hard place as Google 'enhances' services.
i want my old version back
whoever design this new one
man !!! you are fired !!!
such an eyesore
The old version was so good. Better change it. Brutal.
Wasn't broke. Way worse.
Not a happy camper.
One small note: In the previous version, when looking at related companies (under the Summary of a selected company), I appreciated being able to quickly see on which market each related company is traded. I am disappointed to see that this variable is not even available under the advanced preferences. Otherwise, thank you for the service. I find it fast and intuitive to use.
The new version just never fully loads on my (current) IE... Left in not-crashed-not-working-can't-do-anything limbo and have to crank up Task Manager to kill it.
Used to love it, now I hate it
i like old version
Sidebars... geeez who thinks that's a good idea. It just takes up real estate. Obviously you don't know how people use Goggle Finance. Maybe you should hire some non-gamer types.
When it takes more key strokes or paging or scrolling to get my information it is not progress. Change is not by definition progress.
Fortunately this is not my primary financial tool and has become less so.
My expectations weren't high and you didn't exceed them.
New is not always better, it seems!
I hate the new interface. What's the crap on the left? Take it off. Take all of it off. I don't need it. Why not give me the choice? Where did the institutional % go? Don't kid yourself, Google Finance is very sparse on information, I liked it because it was easy to access, it was big and had the few things I wanted.
Tell me, what do I do with a chart that occupies 15% of the screen? NOTHING. Have any of you ever invested? And before you give me the option for a full screen chart 5 mouse clicks away, I can do that with Yahoo. KISS Google, because I already left your shitty new newspaper format.
Unlike most of the comments thus far, I actually slightly prefer the new layout. But the biggest welcome changes are the addition of technical indicators and additional financial information among other things. Thanks Google! I always found Google Finance charts to be the best from a user-graphical interface perspective, but they just lacked so much information and couldn't be personalized (i.e. OHLC, Candlestick), that they were just a starting point before going to other sites, such as Yahoo or StockCharts. Now, Google has added more advanced charting capabilities to make it a more viable alternative to the other sites.
Peter, Institutional % is clearly indicated right at the top, next to div/yield.
Is the new site slightly less simple? Yes. I guess that could seem unlike Google, but I can live with it. The left navigation bar and recent quotes certainly aren't vital, and I could do without as well. But the additional charting capabilities and financials that Google now provides more than makes up for that shortcoming.
I love the new site!
I have to agree with most of the comments. I HATE THIS NEW INTERFACE! It is very inflexible. What is with the "Move Up, Move Down" menus......what if I want to move it left or right? No drop and drag is a DRAG!
I have to agree with Peter below.....what is with the worthless frame off the the left? What a waste of space! Yes, at least give me the option to get rid of that!
Also why can I not see both the % and point changes for the symbols I am watching?
I again have to agree with Peter, the old interface was simple and that was the beauty in it. Everything I needed was right there and in an appropriate spot (thus no need for "move" features).
Your designers should be laid off! Very un-Google like! If you're going to make all these changes at least give us more dynamic ways to configure it! Have you ever used MyYahoo?? Take a few lessons from them!
I WANT THE OLD INTERFACE BACK!
Glen Bradford Checking in.
I run a hedge fund, write for TheStreet.com, etc.
Can we get a link to the old version? Does the code still work? Was this built on top?
Google was nice before, because it was easy, it gave me the information that I wanted very QUICKLY.
The information that I want at my fingertips with one click:
Price
P/E
Market Cap
Last 2 quarters, last 2 years of income statement and cash from operations
Price/Book
Price/Sales
That is all.
feel free to shoot me an email
gbradfor at purdue.edu
how about a tab for classic view?
how about a "set up your own finance layout"?
anything? this was the best tool. now it's.... just the same as everything else, only half useful.
let's short google stock tomorrow
haha, i am laughing because the new version drives me nuts
two of my 4 portfolio's will not display after the update. I attempted to export them as OFX and reimport in a new portfolio, no luck. I sure hope I haven't lost several years of transactions, because of this new version...I am all for change, just not all for data loss or whatever happened with the new version!
In Firefox, The new version cuts off the right side of the display of several columns of my portfolio which has rendered google finance useless to me. Please fix this.
worse than bad. no finacials anymore- no XBRL to pull data from 10Q's or anything.
ooooh we get to do some new charting stuff. big deal.
it is worse than bad I am going back to aol or MSN.
My second portfolio is empty. What happened to it? The protfolio name is still lsited, but nothing is in it?
Can you at least give me the option of seeing the yields on the 10 year bond like I had before. (30 year would be nice too) I know tracking individual bonds would be a herculean task but giving the bond yields for US treasury notes of various years and a yield curve option would greatly improve the sight and give you and edge over yahoo finance and others.
I love how the real-time quotes have the last changing digits flash green or red momentarily depending on whether it's an upward change or downward change. And as always, I love the extended hours charts. But please allow us to collapse and hide the left navigation bar so that our charts will be nice and wide again, otherwise it's the iGoogle controversy all over again.
The new layout is fine by me, although I'm irritated that so much of the left portion of the screen is wasted by your "recent stocks" and the navigation bits.
Really, the big question to me is: why bother? The whole reason I used Google Finance was because of the clear interface? Why invest in something that doesn't need investment. How about spending your time fixing the horrifically broken and spam filled discussion forums?
Again: HOW ABOUT FIXING THE HORRIBLY BROKEN AND USELESS DISCUSSION FORUMS. THEY HAVE ONLY BEEN COMPLETELY BROKEN AND USELESS FOR AROUND THE LAST 6 MONTHS!
On a different note, I'd love it if you would add futures quotes, eMini S&P 500 (ES), specifically.
The information inside my portfolio doesn't stream anymore. Is that just a glitch, or is that one of the improvements? I'm so use to feeling that Google is good at everything it does. This is a shame. I really do hope you'll find a way to let people have the option of using the old interface. It was perfect.
I like this new version but it's horribly broken in Opera 10 and the BlackBerry browser :(
Rendering is also broken for the portfolio view in Opera Mini
WHY? Why fix things that aren't broken? New design looks terrible - I moved to Yahoo Finance which is actually pretty nice!
New version crashes flash plugin in CHROME when viewing charts.
A Brand New "Horrible" Look and Feel for Google Finance. Don't waste your time - put the old one back.
Compare checkbox does not work Firefox 3.0.11 screen res 1920 X 1200.
when are we going to see the instant quotes from BOVESPA (Brazil's top stock exchange and world's 4th)?
R9
I like the new look. One question I have is why are the blogs linked to the stock so outdated for some? I imagine there are plenty of new blogs with updated information.
Why does everyone not like the new look? I am loving it. They put back all my fave stuff and made it look better. Plus they added those mini graphs.. I dont know about all of you but I like it a lot!
AWFUL new version. Please put in a "classic" version! I loved the simplicity of the previous version!
To top it off, I seem to have lost ALL of the transaction data in two of my four portfolios.
Opera v9.64 on Windows and Linux is horribly broken by the new changes. Please fix.
Re: Moving Averages. Something is terribly wrong here, eg: the 200day MA is correct over the short term (say up to one year) but for the longer periods it changes and becomes incorrect. The value of a MA does not change whether it is viewed over 1 year or 10 years. This is a very bad mistake - data should be 100% reliable, forget about fancy presentation - get the basics correct.
This seems to have been assigned to some junior person who has no understanding of stocks and companies at all. Let's see, just a few basics for instance. Dividend and yield? No, NOT on the CHART, on the summary information of the stock! LET ALONE PEER COMPARISONS. How about showing the months on the bottom of the 1 year chart, rather than some obscure slide bar that has the last 30 years marked on it? There's more but I am not going to waste anymore time on this. As a "free" service this is horribly over priced. TOTAL FAIL!!! I didn't like the old interface all that much, but this is beyond awful.
I use Google finance heavily and even pull data to my excel files for my daily update. The new format does not present data in a discreet format, i.e. price and price change are now combined in the table. I can use this new format by truncating the additional information; however it makes the process cumbersome. I like the old version and I noticed that I can pull it up on my phone. So I guess all I need to do is to trick you site into thinking my computer is a phone :- )
P.S. The Technical indicators are a BIG plus.
Thanks
Like it very much, a lot new features, especially the link for events. wish google update API tools too. like including the screener in API tools
The new UI is HORRIBLE.
The fonts are all messed up on the iPhone with the new UI. The left hand column is a huge waste of space. Not a single one of the new features is interesting or desirable. Great quantities of good financial information have been removed. The portfolio view with the checkboxes is just plain ugly. Google is becoming Microsoft. I guess it is time to start looking for a replacement.
The improvements are great, especially the candlestick plots.
There is an error I observed with the data reported for the Bombay Stock Exchange. The % change for Tata Motors today is around -1% whereas it is showing as 6% on Google finance. The 6% is possible if we calculate the % change from Thursday and today (one day was skipped). Would be great if you could rectify it :-)
One feature I found incredible informative was the historical data! Please add this back!!!
how can I view my 30 stocks simultaneously, live and streaming, like on the older version? When I hit overview, I get news, not yhe list of my stocks????
Can anyone teach me how to create a link for a chart including an external feed source?
I think that was possible before, now it seems to be missing.
Pete
im using firefox on a mac. Everytime I click on a stock the screen goes to that stock and then the pinwheel starts and I have to force quit. What's that about? I couldn't use google finance. Don't make me go to yahoo. Bring back the old one. what the hell.
You guys blow Yahoo! Finance away! Historical data, charts and everything is much easier to use. I never have to go back to Yahoo! again. Thank god.
I would agree the left nav stuff is a little unnecessary... But as long as you keep stepping up and giving me better data than yahoo! I am happy.
I really like the stock charts in the competitor tickers.
Does anybody know how many days 1 period on a technical indicator equals?
For example, if I wanted to put a 50 day moving average, how many periods does this equal?
Thank you!
Google Finance is broke on Opera. You think you could make a change without making things so bad? Come on Google, usually you guys don't drop the ball on things. But it looks like you guys didn't do your homework on this one.
Hey Dave B:
It depends on the interval that is currently being displayed. This is clearer to see on Candlestick or OHLC view, where the interval for each bar is indicated in the top left (changes from 'Zoom' to 'Interval').
On a 5 min bar, your 20 period moving average would be a 20 period 5-min moving average.
Likewise on Daily, it would be a 20 day moving average.
The release coming up next week will have clearer text in the indicator panel for showing what time period you're on (it's not so obvious in the line chart view).
Come on guys! You missed reordering of the portfolios!
Google Finance's new look and feel is an improvement -- except when it's not working. For example: (on Firefox)
1. Portfolios page displays only "Portfolio related news"; the tabs for Overview, Fundamentals, Performance and Transactions are disabled.
2. Interactive Google Finance Charts are missing making stock comparisons unavailable; the tabs for Settings, Plot feeds, Technicals, Link to this chart are disabled.
Please fix or make the old version available.
Actual Charts are not big enough. Should be able to resize them.
Technicals do not stay on the screen. Each time I return to the same stock or another stock - they are GONE. But peeking in the Technicals section - reveals all settings intact. To ake the technicals reappear I have to uncheck and re-check all indicators. Bug ? I stink so.
Please add technical alerts to be sent to your email PLEASE!
Is there any way I can add the Google portfolio tracker and financial content to my website?
The links for settings, plotfeeds, technicals under the charts don't work with firefox on linux :(
When listing the delayed price of a unit trust it shows it in pounds and pence whereas the portfolio transactions are all in pence. This means the portfolio cant match the market price. I.e. real time price = 1.89 , whereas the portfolio is listed as 189.
Is this where bugs should be posted?
Change for the sake of change is childish.
People who designed the new interface have never invested one penny in the markets and have no clue what investors need or want.
need a place to track options!!!
It will be great if Ichimoku indicators are added to Google Charts as well.
Thanks
It is really good tool to track shares....
Some company links are outdated. Contact info no where to be found. What can be done?
can we make google finance show on our gmail page, like there is one for orkut etc.
if it is not please do it.
Thanks
