Tell us what you think

We’re looking to get some organized feedback from y’all about Google Finance. Please take a few minutes to take our survey and tell us about how you use it -- which features you like, which you don’t use, and a bit about what kind of investor you are.

This survey will help us learn what’s working for you and focus our energies on the areas that matter most to you. We look forward to hearing from you!

Take our survey!

That survey was not what I thought it was going to be. I didn't have a chance to make suggestions about improving Google Finance!

google finance is broken, the sorting options do not work anymore :)

octdisk said...

Exactly, I wanted to write what patrick just posted in the feedback. I really don't need extra features or fancier charts. I just want the basic stuff to work. The sorting capability was really neat, and Yahoo Finance portfolios don't have it. And now it's broken.

octdisk said...

Full disclosure: octdisk is starhold is me I didn't try to post many times with different names. But, I just logged into blogger for the first time in ages. I guess they changed my name.

Hello Marianne:

Are the historical price .csv files still available for the Toronto Stock Exchange?

The download links are missing from the TSE historical price pages, but not the other exchanges.

Thanks for your time.

I think that Google Finance is very Bad. I use all G-Tools but GFinance is very poor of contents. In our university we use Yahoo Finance or Datastream.
The only important thing in Finance is to get data series!
Datastream is the best in the world but you have to pay a lot of money (my university pays an annual subscription).
In my opinion if Google wants enter in Finance Area, it needs to make a revolution (Macro series, bond series, equity series, currency series, future etc etc). You have to make free this kind of information! This is Google Philosophy (GMAIL,Hearts,Office).

Basil said...

I'd like to suggest two features:

-the ability to choose which financial stats or ratios are included above the graph

-the ability to create a ratio between financials (like free cash flow to share price) and graph it over time

Google Finance should also show information about the New York Mercantile Exchange. The Merc shows the crude, and precios metal markets.

Indian and other Asian Stocks Please .. I cannot add Indian Stocks to my portfolio. More Portfolio features needs to be added . I use moneycontrol.com portfolio manager . Its free and have awesome features .Just that their UI sucks big time .

SirFelix said...

The biggest issue with Google Finance is the rounding of the stock quotes to the nearest penny. If the designers of Google Finance did some research into the history of the SEC and its rulings for stock quotes they would realize that 3 decimal places is standard. This is especially needed for smallcap stocks.

I think some technical analysis features need to be added. Minimally, the ability to graph moving averages would be a good start.

The Google Finance site looks nice and the charts are superior...I just have to dream about a real time feed where I can customize the screen data and get my information from Google instead of Yahoo Finance. Many others have commented thoroughly on what needs to be included - if I may add to the list briefly - an option to get moving averages and range from highs/lows - if Google Finance was comparable at least, and vastly superior and more comprehensive utility at best when compared to Yahoo Finance...it would draw a lot more people like me into the Google space.

My previous query still hasn't been answered (Ayan).

Let us say the exchange rate is £1 = $2 and I buy some Apple stock on 1Jan8. I buy 10 shares at $2 each. I have paid £10 therefore. Let us say I sell on 1Feb08 when the stock price is still $2, but the exchange rate is now £1 = $1. In real life, I get £20 from the sale, £10 profit. If I depended on Google's terribly truncated facility, I woud, apparently, be making zero. Allowing the choice of currency for each purchase is therefore a *must* and I don't see why this even has to be demanded.

I simply cannot believe a Google employee (Ayan) actually tried to justify this lack of basic functionality by portraying Google's deficiency as a "feature".

It seems illogical that the Top Movers section of the Google Finance never picks up GOOG. When it was the lowest weeks ago, and today when the gain is around 16%. It shows other stocks that are 11% up, but not GOOG. I would like to know why?
If this continues to happen, how can it be trusted?

Google finance was great until you removed the market blogs "blogspot" from the blog posts feature. You also have the worst customer service I have ever seen! JB said...

Another bug report.

The "download to spreadsheet" function under historical prices provides a csv file. It strips out the commas from the volume, as it should. It does not, however, strip out the commas from the high, low, open, close.

An example where it is broken: click "download to spreadsheet on this page"

I think google is wonderfully good it sometimes seems like the page is too cluttered alot at least in my portfolio sections...I wish I could personalize that section in the manner of having a certain color or symbol for each column that should alert me if a stock is up down (like what you have now with the green and red) or if I'm up or down on my cash investment basis ( like purple or blue). Basically I'd like to fix the clutter in my Portfolio section...or at least have my own ablility to customize it for easier reading like MY YAHOO! page is.

Also, I dont know why but it seems when I try to access GOOGLE FINANCE on my phone or PSP it never loads or has a problem connecting to the page....I'm not sure if there could be a smaller fastload javascript-free version for phones or PSPs like you have for Google Web...

Mark said...

1) bug report: some mutual fund prices "disappear" and show 0.00, specifically, PRLAX and FLATX
2) i concur with the rounding to a cent, this messes with my total shares/$, specifically in the funds i manually enter in every 2 weeks that get automatically bought in my 401(k)
3) i'd like to be able to just "hide" a security after selling it instead of it still showing up in my "active" list, per se, as without the gain or loss associated with the sell my overall avg. is messed up; however, once i remove it from the portfolio all my TX are gone! perhaps someone knows how to do this already?

Mark said...

p.s. overall i like google finance. it's in it's infancy relative to yahoo finance so i don't expect all the stuff yahoo finance has and since i use google tools for everything else i like to use google finance. as a software engineer by trade, i appreciate hard work when i see it ;0)

i do have to say as a chart reader i find the flash charts rather unreadable; perhaps they are just too small. maybe an option to pop open a window with a larger chart would be nice and as some have mentioned using candlesticks, or, IMHO, OHLC Bars instead of the simple line and being able to add variables such as simple moving avgs (i.e. 50 and 200-day).

You should be warned if you are starting to track stock data on
Google. Their data is wrong, and there is no way to get any feedback
-- they don't support any of their services

Nearly every single stock that I check on at Google has inaccurate data. Almost every single stock has the WRONG LOW PRICE OF THE DAY on almost EVERY SINGLE STOCK I'VE CHECKED

I've checked them w/ other sites like Yahoo, & w/ the account I pay for where I do my trading )Merrill Lynch), & the data doesn't match up, & which is how I know Google is wrong, not the other sites.

How can your programs be this far off?

how can you be releasing such bad data?

What other data is bad that Google has on their sites?

Just one example:

Compare Google price info for a few stocks:

When I opened this morning the Google finance page I was surprised to see that you have changed the layout. I have to say that usually I'm open to the new and I like to experiment with new layouts, but this time I feel that you guys did a very bad job. If I come to this page, it is to see how my portfolio is doing and to see if there are news releases related to my portfolio. but now I really have to look for this info, because the portfolio is at the bottom right of the page (the last place you would normally look when you read a web page) and the news related to my portfolio are hidden behind a tab. This is bad design, because of lack of knowledge or because of the intention to promote news. If I want to see business news in general, than I would go to google News. Please change this page back to a google finance page and don't make it another google News page. Thanks.

1. Keep the user's history of daily portfolio changes % (perhaps in a cookie; don't keep $ amounts)
2. When comparing any stock (or , more interestingly, any index or ETF) it can be compared to the user's portfolio.
3. Enable sharing. This can fuel forum discussions.
4. And even be a tool to evaluate the validity of a user's opinion.

I keep having trouble with 1 stock. A while ago, UGTH changed to HTM. Google didn't pick up this change (Yahoo finance told me about it though), and instead of changing my stock over to HTM, it helpfully erased my transaction history for UGTH. So, I re-copied my transaction history from Yahoo and recreated my stocks under HTM. Randomly, Google Finance decides to erase my HTM transaction history for no immediately apparent reason. It has erased the transaction history twice, three times if you include when the stock changed names. Any ideas?

As I was attempting to comment on one of the Financial blogs, signed in of course, when I clicked Post, I got a flashing "sign in" page, which flashed so fast I can't read it, over and over and over. When I click the back button (quickly several times to get past each of the flashing screens), it takes me back to my own google finance portfolio(s) page, signed in as I was initially. When I tried again, it faithfully reproduced itself... flashing and flashing. The financial page was for WB, the first blog on the listing.

And you need a link someplace on the google finance pages for Technical Support, so that problems can be reported, and thus fixed quickly.

A few improvement I would like.

I think this 'google finace' is a great service. Since im heading into business school, it'll serve as an excellent tool to keep up with stocks while traveling or when im away from my own computer. I did find one glitch tho, that is pretty severe. If you goto gooogle>finaces>Rogers Communications Inc. (USA), if you try to open a nickname on google groups, it'll want you to sign up for it while it takes you to another page where the serious error happens. itll reload the page several times and keeps replaying it self, unless i hit stop, itll just clog up my browser history with refresh spam shratnel. thought it would be useful to point it out, if you poke around the rogers' discussion page enough someone should be able to ping it out into view.

I tried to fill in the survey but apparently it's already closed, hence I will post my feedback as a comment. Overall I am happy with the system but I am missing some important functionality w.r.t. evaluating how I am doing. For this it is important to know how much money I originally put in and how much it's worth now. Hence, the notion of plain cash is missing (this can probably be calculated outright from the history of transactions). However, note that by selling and reinvesting that money into another stock I lose track of what money I originally put in (which is how I would like to measure performance). I am a European user so my main currency is Euro but I also invest in USD. For currency exchanges it is important to able to put into the system what was the exchange rate in order to keep track if my portfolio performance. It would also be nice to compare performance of your portfolio against major indices in order to decide if you're better off purchasing an index rather than picking stocks yourself. It would also be nice if you're already investing a couple of years what is your annual return. Finally, exporting the history of stock prices that are not on US markets to a CSV format seems impossible. Why is that?

These are about the comments I can think of right now but overall I like the tool although it would be really useful to have the additional functionality described above. Cheers.

There is a fictional ticker listed with my client's company name that is creating some confusion, and I'd like to have it removed, but cannot find a way to contact Google Finance to remove it. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi NGOrphan,

Google Finance discussion boards are moderated by real people. Every abuse report is investigated by a moderator who also checks the whole thread to understand the context under which the post originated. This is a forum specifically geared towards discussion of finance and, therefore, posts should be on that topic.

When we come across a post which violates the guidelines - http://www.google.com/googlefinance/communityguidelines.html - we will usually send a message asking the user in question to review them so that he/she can use them as a guide for their future posts. Although most users will receive a message reminding them of the guidelines, we do reserve the right to ban people at any time if we believe it is justified and/or if the user has violated the guidelines before. We also determine in good faith and at our sole discretion whether to remove any content which violates the guidelines or posting standards.

We take the banning of a user very seriously and only resort to this action when we believe it to be warranted and in the best interest of others affected by the banned user's behavior. We do not review posts for opinion, but all users are expected to follow the guidelines and adhere to our posting standards.

Thanks for your feedback and for using Google Finance Groups.

The downloaded financial data (historical prices) doesn't coincide with the graphical data shown on Google finance.

I tested with the whole history of MSFT and graphed it in Excel (both on the same scale (logarithmic and not logarithmic)). Noticed there was some differences between what Google Finance shows and what the downloaded data shows. Especially the area I was looking at was between 1986 and 1988.

What can I do to make the downloaded data identical to what the Google graphics shows ? Why is there a difference ?

I have tried substituting a $ or a period(.) as the beginning character, and it worked for

Why do the others not work? Are there substitute symbols? Where can I find them? Many YAHOO symbols just do not work in your quote module or give me the wrong information or Company.

Bug with pinks -

If I have 500k shares of a $0.0002 stock, and say I paid $13 in commission, it computes the cost basis as $13.

For other computations it correctly computes the current value.

A temp fix is to say that you paid $113 in commission to get the cost basis right, but that's pretty silly when it'd be better to handle it correctly in the first place.

1)While adding stocks (not US stocks)to my portfolio, I typed the company name in the stock box, it will give relevant names in the drop down, but if we type the company name more than a word, immediately it will gray the boxes of number of stocks and price. I could not able to enter the amount and number of stocks, if I used more than a word in the stock search.

2)First I choose Indian rupees as my default currency of the portfolio, but after editing some other in the portfolio, the default currency is coming back to US dollar.

You need to make it possible to input shares to 3 decimal places as opposed to 2. Historically shares have been tracked to 3 decimal places, and mutual funds still to this day trade at 3 decimal places. With the current system I have to add a cash line item that reconciles the difference, which is a very rough and inaccurate way of doing things. If you want people to take Google Finance seriously as a tool to track and manage investments, you need to take the coding seriously and allow for more than 2 decimal places.

This just my 2 cents (pun intended).

The major turn off for me is that it does not work with more than 2 decimal points. This makes it impossible to use Google Finance with my 401k or with my Sharebuilder transactions, as all those involve 3 or 4 decimal points.

Also, if you have your dividends paid in cash instead of reinvested, there doesn't seem to be a way to have this included in the Overall Return.

Another suggestion is allow us to customize the fields for the different views.
