Eric Schrock, Engineering Tech Lead, and Katie Jacobs Stanton, Group Product Manager

We're excited to welcome you to the official Google Finance blog. This is how we want to communicate with the community of people who need financial information at their fingertips. We'll write about new features, share observations about new tools in the financial industry and get your feedback about new releases. You'll hear from all kinds of folks involved in developing Google Finance: full-time engineers, 20% engineers, interface designers, interns, product managers and anyone else we can convince to post in case we become too dull.

We want to hear from you too. Please give us feedback on what you'd like to see, read or hear from the Finance team in the comments section below.

I think I've found a bug.

If you add a UK stock symbol to your portfolio (e.g. LON:SDL) Google Finance assumes the currency unit is British Pounds, when it's actually British Pence.

Seriously, I nearly died when I saw my shares were worth 100 times more than they actually are...

Congrats to the Google Finance team... you have a trememdous equity offering... the AJAX charting is wonderful... multiple views of data on one page... no reload... keep up the good work!

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the bug report. This issue was resolved in our last release. Can you try again and confirm you see the correct currency display in your portfolio?

Thanks for using Google Finance!
Katie

Congrats on the new blog!

I greatly enjoy the simplicity and intuitiveness of GFinance. I can't wait for more releases!

One small request for portfolios: Dividend Payout and Reinvestment Tracking.

Cheers!

Welcome Google Finance to Blog World,

I have never been a Republican (carpetbaggers stealing the working man's money for the rich) or Democrat (bleeding-hearts picking the working woman's pockets for the lazy and/or ignorant so-called "poor") -- "There isn't a dimes worth of difference between the two" -- Will Rogers?), I'm just an average Joe disgusted with the entire political/financial cancer destroying the grand vision (with the exception of their devilishly self-serving slavery hypocrisies) of our original founders.

That said, a Challenge: for the well being of the lower and, dwindling, middle classes, "tell it like it is" -- the U.S. and World, for the most part, are dominated by plutocracies (rich rule -- e.g., U.S.), kleptocracies (corrupt regimens -- e.g., Africa/S. Am.), and theocracies (e.g., Vatican, Islam, et al). Democracies, and waring to create "democracies", is an illusion. One corrupt system is overthrown to create others, in the name of "democracy" for the real purpose of one plutocracy, kleptocracy, or theocracy (the 4-headed beast of the Book of Revelations is the Worlds' 4 major clerical castes/religions) to dethrone another.

Show folks how Wall Street, Banks, multi-nationals (who have NO allegiance to the U.S. Constitution -- e.g., off-shore to avoid taxes), and related, are a den of thieves that buy the government and use the national debt, once they have milked a new scheme (e.g., junk bonds, interest only loans, et al), to bail themselves out of financial collapse.

Help the little guy by concentrating on the BASICS of personal finance. This is a tall order for a "hot" company such as Google but now that you've all MADE IT BIG, like the Gates'/Allens', perhaps you can now, in good conscience, "give back" something to the "little people" before the entire system collapses under its own financial weight of greed, corruption, and debt.

Don't think you can separate Finance from politics and the human condition. Financial Technocracy is but a weed in the Forest of Influence for Greed.

If you don't "get" this, you are part of the Greed-problem (e.g., Google's net worth US #1) and, rather than using your affluence to give back and set things right, all you will show is that you are devoid of Soul.

Here's Lookin' at you Kid (as one of the Last Rays of Hope)

I've been dying to use gfinance to track my stocks. I use it for US stocks but I invest heavily in Canadian mining stocks that are sold Over The Counter (OTC). Please, *please*, add support for the OTC symbols of Canadian companies. For example; one such company is called Cornerstone Capital Resources Inc. Their Canadian ticker symbol is CGP. I can get this on gfinance. What I can't get is their OTC symbol, which is CTNXF, which is denominated in US dollars and what I need to track as the stock that I can buy is the OTC (ticker CTNXF) stock. Until gfinance has the capability of tracking OTC stocks I will have to suffer along with yahoo finance and it's bloated, annoying, and cluttered website.

Hi - Google finance is a great tool, but I've got a request - will you ever make it possible to filter companies by country or region? I'm based in the UK, and need to consult information on European companies, but not US....

If you could cover also the fast growing "managed-forex" field this would be appreciated.

Hi,

I would like to know how fresh is some data. I would suggest that you put somewhere on the page the last actualization date.

Specifically, I know that you get the "Income Statement" from Reuters. I would like to know if there is a delay (in hours/days) between its publication on reuters' website and on google finance.

Recently tried swithing to you from Yahoo - Finance.

Your Portfolio Import function will not accept text,.xls or .csv columns.

Nice work; certainly glad GOOG wasn't a symbol I needed.

Hello, I am an investor and would like to see Companies fundamental data in format as in :
http://www.dailygraphs.com/images/staGetStartCsSg.gif

Right now, people are having to pay for fundamental data(since it is not available in organized form), such as sales growth percentage, on a quarter-by-quarter basis etc.

I can help define the requirements voluntarily, so please reach me agrawalavinash1@yahoo.com

Avinash said...

The following is a $100 Million business for individual investors and billions for institutional investors :
I would like to rank companies by Annual sales growth+Last Quarters proft margin.

Dailygraphs allows this :

http://www.dailygraphs.com/images/staGetStartCsSg.gif
But folks should be able to able to define their own formulae for company information, say based on Return-on-equity etc.

I will be more than glad to help define the requirements/test etc on volunteer basis (upto 20hrs/week), so please reach me agrawalavinash1@yahoo.com

Hello Google Finance, Being a successful investor for 9 years, I can say :

Final aim for Google Finance should be to provide fundamental and technical data like Dailygraphs provides :
http://www.dailygraphs.com/

You can tour it at http://www.dailygraphs.com/tours/GraphTour.asp

Please contact me agrawalavinash1@yahoo.com if I can help. I can volunteer 20hrs per week for Google Finance, and am a Stanford management and engineering grad.

I also have a personal finance website http://stocks-artofliving.50megs.com

Hi,

I am looking for links explaining the different terms mentioned in Balance Sheet,Cash Flow and Income Statement. Just a short definition of each term would help in figuring out whether that particular amount is an asset or a liability to the company.

For Ex. Capital Surplus under Balance Sheet.I had again go and search to figure what that supposed to mean for the company.

Hope this helps. Contact me scc6051@gmail.com if you are looking for reviewers to review your new features.

I found that Major Holders data on Finance site is link to MSN money which shows very limited data for Google finance users.

Is it possible that we provide historical ownership data to Google Finance site?

Please contact me at josh@insiderscoop.com or insiderscoop@gmail.com

I would like the information to be accurate and to be able to tell if an information is to old to be trusted.

Trust is important. For example, when I search the number of shares outstanding of JASO (to calculate the market capitalization) I get many values to choose from depending on the source!

Google mkt cap: 5.19B
http://finance.google.com/finance?q=JASO

Yahoo mkt cap: 1.73B
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ks?s=JASO

Reuters mkt cap: 1.00B
http://stocks.us.reuters.com/stocks/overview.asp?symbol=JASO

Nasdaq Market cap: 1.00B
http://quotes.nasdaq.com/asp/SummaryQuote.asp?symbol=jaso&symbol=&symbol=&symbol=&symbol=&symbol=&symbol=&symbol=&symbol=&symbol=&selected=jaso

So, which one should I trust to be the right one?

If I were you, I would like to be known to have the most accurate information (and timely updated) on the web. Information that one can trust (more than the info found on other sites).

As a side note, IMHO Yahoo finance has more timely updated and relevant news sources that you currently have.

I was wondering about what the final aim for Google Finance is. Is it to also provide ability to extract detailed financial data for companies, the way ZacksData, etc does, ie info from balance sheets, income statements etc.

I checked out http://www.zacksdata.com/, looks good, but I believe such sites like Bloomberg fundamental data , CapitalIQ, etc cost $20000 per year ?

Dailygraphs.com provides cheaper data, but still costs around $1000 per year.

Thanks, Avinash

As an investor, I am searching for the next Google before it appears on everyone's Radar screen

My wishlist from GoogleFinance
1)Ability to pull Market data from multiple sources
-Public as well as
-subscription based as well as
-those from specific cells in my spreadsheet

2)Ability to create custom filters
- Companies with accelerating earnings and revenue growth : Data is available and I can define my criterion/formula. MSN Money advance screener is nice but I cannot add proprietory variable from a different source ( My Excel spreadsheet or subscription based var)

3) Custom Display of data a user cares about on the Chart ( Avinash's .gif is a great way to display data )

4) I don't really care about what people think about the stocks Remove the ability to comment on a stock.( Comments are too many and strictly conflicting One says Buy other says Sell ) in other words why add a feature that only confounds - differentiate by adding tools that speak by numbers or paint a pretty graph

5) www.stockfetcher.com : I can create a screen of stocks by using simple words (e.g. above Price(50)) as well as chart patterns ( e.g cup and handle)

6) Integration of Google spreadsheet.

7) Have an open house and we will come show you what we crave for more.

What I like in other places
www.prophet.com : great user interface
msn.money advance screener : basic and *free* screener
www.stockfetcher.com : ability to screen stocks
www.pentaho.com : Reporting and filtering

Hey Google Finance Team....I love the direction you folks are taking the site.....but, before I switch to your service it needs to track stock AND cash holdings. Why is something as basic as tracking cash missing? Please fix this.

I find it quite bothersome that news articles in finance.google.com for a particular stock dont open in a new tab. I love Google Finance and its my tool of choice. When researching a company and reading news, I prefer to keep an open tab with the stock home page present. News should open in a new tab or in a lightbox.

Bug report.

When you select/click on any heading in a financial portfolio, e.g. change, the sorting is done on the symbol name instead of the heading chosen.

Mauro.

Mauro Zallocco said...

An update to the bug report.
It appears that clicking on a heading in results in sorting on the column to the left of the heading selected.

So if you want to sort the "Change" column, click on "Shares" heading etc.

How can I include stock options in the portfolio? What are the prefixes, or suffixes to attach in order for the system to recognize the symbols?

Is it possible to display currency exchange rates in my portfolio or do I need to use the specific currency tools?

When you select/click on any heading in a financial portfolio the all work EXCEPT change. This is a new problem that was working correctly several days ago.
