API, Gadgets, and Tabs, oh my!

Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at 1:05 PM

Today, we're excited to release a Google Finance tab on iGoogle. This tab is a dashboard of financial gadgets which enables you to add, customize and share your Google Finance experience. But here's what's extra cool about these gadgets -- they now have communication skills and can "talk" or "sync" with each other.

As part of this release, we're introducing a bunch of new gadgets, including:

- Top Movers
- SnapQuote
- Related companies
- Company overview
- MiniChart
- Company Sector

Ready to see this tab in action?

But wait, there's more! If you're a developer, we just made it easier for you to make a stock market gadget with our new API. The gadget API for market data provides a framework so developers can display stock market information from the American, Nasdaq and New York stock exchanges within a gadget on Google properties. Unfortunately, due to data licensing restrictions, we couldn't open this API for display on any platform. However, we believe this is a great start in providing easier access to stock market information and hope you have fun with it.

For more specific information, please refer to the following:

- gadget API for market data specs
- Inter gadget-communication documentation
- Discuss with other gadget developers

As always, please let us know what you think in the comments below!

Cool Feature, but the Tab behaves very strange in Opera!

The loading indicator is showing reloads all the time.

This is really cool!!! I've immediately added it to my homepage. But only in anticipation of Canadian data being added - please let us north of the border know when we can get the TSX, Canadian Venture Exchange, etc. in the API and gadgets.

Great work! :) Can you please add "overall gain in cash" to the last column of the portfolio, the % has so much less meaning when its an average of multiple trades.

Also, back on topic, am I clear that there is no way to use this in vista sidebar?

When do we get access to Bomaby Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange?

No good in having NYSE and others on iGoogle if you don't invest in them :(

How do I shrink the text inthe Portfolio box? It is larger than the other boxes/

Great work Google Finance. Maybe we can also have stock fundamental data in the API (along with the stock data).

I think more fundamental financial data is required as attributes. Like SMA, Revenue, Liabilities etc.
Cool start though.

I added the default iGoogle finance tab to my Google homepage and it is unusable. It constantly reloads every second putting load on the browser and attracting my network admin's attention. Unless that refresh time can be set far lower, I won't be using the new Google Finance tab at all.

The behavior I see in Firefox is the same as what Christian Reiter reports in his comment - reloads all the time. This is just not acceptable.

thegreyzone- Thanks for letting us know about this. So we can investigate further, what version of Firefox are you using?

Hi:

We are planning to use the market data api to get information on the funds. Looking through so far the API only provides the details of prices. But, how can we retrieve information about fundamentals of Funds specifically information about "fund family", "manager tenure", "rank" etc. Is there a way we can get this information? Appreciate any information. Thanks.

Nice work.

I'm still waiting (and hoping) for the real-time stock-quotes though.
That would be really great.

Real-time stock quotes cost $$, don't think it will happen but yes it would be VERY nice.

One other thing I think would be excellent for google finance is to rate the comments in all of the discussion in a similar manner to youtube. There are so many terrible comments and ones that are just blatently advertising it would be nice if we could all just give it a thumbs down and it would disappear. :)

Just added the Google Finance tab. But there's no data showing up. None zero. I'm using Safari 3.0.4 on Mac OS 10.4.11. Sounds cool, though. (And by the way, I first decided to add the tab because the data wasn't showing up in the traditional Google finance widget on my iGoogle page. It was earlier today -- and then stopped.)

Here's another vote for making financial fundamentals available through the API. Without that, it's hard to do much of interest. That said, I think I at least figured out how to make gadgets that show spreads on current deals. I hope to publish them soon.

BUT, I am reluctant to publish them--or even use them--because I am also seeing the problem where my iGoogle page refreshes constantly. I have seen this for Firefox 2.0.0.* on WinXP and IceWeasel 2.0.0.* on Debian Etch for x86. But I think it only happens while the markets are open, maybe?

Great tab. In the portfolio gadget, you might consider an option where one could show the total portfolio value without showing all of the individual components in the portfolio. A percent change for the day for the total would be nice also.

I have a long list of symbols that I like to watch but it is so long that the automatic refresh ties up my computer too often. I would like to keep the components invisible and still see how the total is changing during the day. With, of course, the option to reveal the full component list with a click.

I keep hoping for a blog entry on the portfolio development. We need some work there.

Just an FYI for the smart Google engineers: When using the Portfolios gadget and if you use the start page for Google Apps with your own domain, you receive an error message "Information is temporarily unavailable." along with quotes for the Dow, Nasdaq and S&P 500. I have a hunch it could be a licensing issue, but that doesn't completely make sense, given that the start page is still hosted by google (the url is still partnerpage.google.com). It would be outstanding if someone could figure out how to fix this!!!

Any chance of making a non-gadget API? I don't mind the stocks being delayed, but I want to use it behind the scenes on a server for an AIR application I'm building.

The finance section is great (for example, the graphs automatically convert on a stock split) but it sometimes tries to be too clever.

For example, The two stories flagged on the GFIG share price for 03-Apr-2008 concern a company, GFI Informatique Group which is completely unrelated to GFI Inc which issues the GFIG stock (on Nasdaq). The implications are obvious and potentially disturbing.

Does the API provide a post method to upload a portfolio to a google finance page?

I think google finance is terrific. Is there a way to transfer or copy a portfolio including transactions from one google account to another?

TABs, especially finance Tabs inspired me to move from Yahoo's richer, messier feature set.

HOWEVER, the MOVE mid October 08 of horizontal 0.5" tabs in a row to
vertical 2.0" tabs in a column is a waste of precious space. And not optional! I can VIEW much more FINANCE and OTHER data in without this change.
